Welcome February and all of the fun and exciting holidays it brings to celebrate – Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day! Our preschool students are so excited for all of the special things these holidays hold, as well as celebrating the 100th Day of School!
For the month of February, our Tools of the Mind theme is Pet Vet. The students will continue working in their centers to take care of pets. We will pretend to be veterinarians and even record our notes of our checkups. We will also have fun training our pets to have good manners. All in all it will be a fun month of planning and acting out scenarios that might happen at a veterinarian’s office.
This month we will read many books during Story Lab about the weather, seasons, and special holidays we have coming up. The students have made so much progress during Graphics Practice to hold their markers with three fingers. This month we will try some of our trickiest shapes including spirals, candy canes, and grass blowing in the wind.
We have really begun to understand the concept of graphing and learning information by looking at a graph. In February, we will each make a weather graph to find out which kind of weather we experience the most. This month I will also be introducing a range card to each child that he/she will be working with for the month. The card will have a range of three numbers: one they are comfortably and consistently counting, one number below, and one number above to challenge them. Each day they will choose one number on their range card to work with and use the number at different stations with different materials. They will then mark on their range card each day which number they chose to work with.
Science and Social Studies
This month we will be learning all about weather! We will talk about sunny weather and how to stay safe in the sun. We will talk about rainy weather, the water cycle, and why it rains. We will talk about snowy weather and experiment with ice and salt. And finally, we will talk about stormy weather. We will make a tornado in a bottle and try to build structures out of blocks that can withstand an “earthquake.”
All students will take part in weekly specials that include acting, music, Spanish, Chinese, art, and karate.
