April showers bring May flowers. Our students are in full bloom in our preschool classroom, and we can’t wait until the flowers are as well! The students have all learned and grown so much this school year, and we only have a few months to go.
For the month of April, our Tools of the Mind theme is grocery! Over the next two months, we will transform our centers into different departments of a grocery store: deli, florist, produce, bakery, delivery dock, and checkout. This is typically one of the favorite Tools of the Mind themes because of how much background knowledge the students have about this theme.
In the month of April, we will begin reviewing some of the shapes we have already learned in graphics practice. We will now really focus on holding our marker with a three-finger grip as well as making our shapes much smaller and leaving a space between each shape. We will review bowls, bagels, and half-eaten cookies. During story lab, we will read books about two of the special holidays this month – Easter and Earth Day.
This month in math, we will be working in stations on some of our number operations skills. We will work on counting, comparing, estimating, measuring, sorting, and patterning. We had time earlier this year to freely explore all of our special collections. Now we will really be using those collections to explore and practice some important math skills. We will also practice writing some of the number that we count, as well as some basic addition skills.
Science and Social Studies
This month we will be learning all about elephants. We will compare and contrast two different kinds of elephants – the Asian elephant and the African elephant. By looking at our globe, we can see where they are from and discuss the weather in those places. We will talk about what they use their trunks for, how much water they drink in one day, and (the usual student favorite) mud baths!
All students will take part in weekly specials that include acting, music, Tumbles, and art.
- No school Friday, April 19 through Friday, April 26 for spring break
